Chapter 28

Eva sat at the bar, knocking back hard drinks while the wedding wrapped up around her. I hate straight people weddings. She wasn’t big on gay weddings either, but damn if she didn’t feel as much like shit at those. Two men, two women… who gave a shit. Two straight people trading nuptials? Fuck it. More Jack Daniels, please.

“Rough day, huh?” Kathryn slipped onto the stool beside her. “I’m sorry.”

“Whatever.” Eva rolled the ice around in her glass. “This time next week I’ll be rebounding in San Francisco.”

Kathryn didn’t reply to that. “You wanna bail and go back to my place? I hear someone hasn’t seen Titanic in a good long while. Watch Leo die again. That always cheers you up.”

“No thanks. Wouldn’t want to ruin your romantic night with your boyfriend.”

“Who the hell says we’re having a romantic night? We’re going to Paris soon. That can wait. Whatever.”

“Please.” Eva snorted into her glass. “You guys are at a wedding. You’re going to go home with him and make love with thoughts of how much you two love each other.”

Kathryn shifted on her stool. Made you uncomfortable, huh? “What makes you say that?”

“Because that’s what I would do if I had my girlfriend.”

Before Kathryn could attempt to assuage Eva’s bad mood, the announcement for the bouquet and garter toss was made. Gag. Eva stared forward as it was decided to go against tradition and do the garter toss first.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” Kathryn moaned. “Ian’s in the bunch.”

“That man wants to marry you so badly that he’ll punch out every other man here for Jasmine Bliss’s garter.”

“Don’t remind me.” If Kathryn and Eva could agree on one thing, it was that neither was big on getting married anytime soon. I’m definitely not getting married soon. Not without an eligible woman at her side. “Oh… oh no.”

A bunch of male voices roared in laughter and good humor behind Eva.

“Get me out of here, Eva.”

She didn’t have to turn around to see who had caught the garter. “Fuck you, Kathryn.”

“Tequila, please.”

The bartender grabbed a bottle while Kathryn slammed her head against the counter. Eva clapped her on the back…

…And caught sight of Nadia gliding by, standing off to the side for the bouquet toss.

Jasmine stood at the front of the room, bouquet high in the air while every eligible woman – beside Kathryn and Eva, apparently – grouped up to try their hand at destiny.

Nadia never once extended her hands for the bouquet. It sailed over her head, batting some other woman’s hand. This created a rowdy volley, petals fluttering to the ground while more than one woman fought for control of the bouquet. It’s like a fucking war in here. Eva would have laughed if she had any good humor left in her.

Someone smacked the bouquet so hard it landed right in Nadia’s hands.

Eva missed the commotion erupting among all the women who lost out. Nadia shrieked, dropping the bouquet and turning away from the cursed thing.

Her eyes met Eva’s only a few yards away.
